Recession Hits, Spa Sales Plunge. Some Dealers, However, Report Sales
Increases. Spas Sales Down 50%. Spa sales are considered "durable goods" and closely track home and car sales. In July there were 4.6 million unsold homes in the US. Sales amount to just 530,000 annually. At the current rate there are enough houses to satisfy buyers for over 8 years. GM and Ford lost $24.1 billion in the second quarter. The loss at GM, some $15 billion, exceeded the market value of its common shares outstanding. Business is lousy and there is every possibility it will remain lousy for the next two years. Two dealers in England See 2008 As Their Best Year Ever! The fact is that sales are down 50% in the UK. British buyers will probably buy around 6,000 spas in 2008. The buyers that are left are wealthy people who are not affected by the recession. 90% of UK Spa Dealers Are Gone. At the top of the market, there were estimated to be some 900 dealers sharing annual sales of 12,000 units. That worked out to be just 13 units per store. The fact is that many of these dealers were in some other business and they have not purchased any new inventory in 2008. Many just sold spas on the internet. The reality is that there are now about 90 dealers in the UK who actually sell and service spas as their primary business. |
The Remaining Buyers Are Wealthy Or Have a Medical Condition. Many people have jobs which are not affected by the economic cycle. Some families have two incomes and few obligations. They want a quality spa that will give them comfort, therapy and provide an entertainment area for their home. If you discount your inventory of quality American spas because you feel presured by Chinese prices, you are underestimating the intelligence of your buyer and you will lose your profits for nothing. Consumers who have money to spend and who are shopping for a quality product expect to pay between £5,000 and £10,000 for an American spa. |

| £150 Chinese Bike. I bought this bike at Tesco. The chain broke on the second day and now the gears slip. It looks just like a real bike, but its not. Now I have wasted £150 and I still need a dependable bike. | £650 British Bike If I had known what I was looking for, for example a well made derailer, I might have spent a little more for this British bike. It will last it's owner the rest of his life, mine lasted the rest of the week. Now I have two bikes, some bargain. | ||||||
